RE: Field Trip with the Forest Service

dave54, I could not agree more. What I meant is that my meeting with district rangers will probably not have an impact on how things are handled in other forests in other states. Probably not, and I think I prefer it that way. What is reasonable access in one NF may not be in another, or within another area of the same NF. Soils, precipitation patterns, and vegetation response can vary significantly even within the same localized area. My local forest has identified two good examples less than 1 mile apart. One is really hammered by dispersed use and is impacting the stream ecology and fishing, so the FS is blocking the spot to prevent any further dispersed camping there. The other also gets a lot of use, but the FS has determined the site is virtually indestructible and heavy use will not create any soil, erosion, or watershed problems. This area is planned to be left fully open to OHV use and dispersed camping. Other areas may be partially blocked/closed to off-road use on a rotational basis. After a few years of recovery they may be opened and other nearby spots closed. We must remain vigilant, though, against increasingly stringent regulations applied broad stroke from Washington DC. Remember, in 1930's Germany the Nuremburg laws were enacted incrementally. The environmental industry is using the same strategy (they admit so on their web sites!). I have been involved with Lasen NF RDP/TMP and am not happy, especially when it comes to OHV use. The FS is only studying 5 specific areas and leaving the remaining 10 of 1000s of acres closed to any use other than what is currently designated. The entire forest will have less than 2 miles of designated Singletrack. Following the process is the correct way to do things, but unfortunately (fortunately from other standpoints) the FS only received 7 comment letters regarding trails that magically have maintained themselves for years, but will not be included in the TMP because they cant afford to maintain. Funny thing is I sent a letter in, my wife, my 3 y.o., 2 of my in-lwas and 2 frineds. Really it looks to the forest servise as only one person cares because the letters I admit were all written by me and signed by others. Damn Process.

RE: Any N.Cal events next 3 months or camping areas for 40'TH?

You could get into the two main staging areas at Foresthill and camp. They have wet wetaher/seasonal closures, so read up before you head out.

Stony is good all year (summer = dust and heat 100+). It does snow int he flats, but not enough to keep you away. Now when it rains they have been knwo to close the bridge and people have been stuck int he flats until the water goes down. Might not be a bad thing eh?

Dont know how many trails would be accessible for the SxS, but Middle Creek can accommodate a large 5er too. At leats the flats and river bottom woudl be accessible. I think Carnegie would work also.

RE: Dealer offering a lower interest rate

Make sure you get the PDI list and go over it thouroughly before driving home. Should take 3 hrs to wlak through and might end up leaving it there for them to fix stuff. Tell him to give you the lower rate w/o the warranty or you will find a different dealer. he already knows you have approved financing and can purchase anywhere.

RE: Trailer Maint. Day Today

What seams do you all have on the roof. My roof appears to be one piece of rubber with only sealant used at fixtures and at edges. The front and rear edges are capped with a L-shaped metal piece with puddy tape underneath. Do you remove the gutters before placing sealant on the edges?

RE: Dump Station Near Santa Rosa/Jenner/Salt Point

I found that Stillwater County Park has a dump station at the CG. It's 1 miles south of Salt Point. $5.50. Thanks though

RE: Overnight in Chico CA ?? / Costco or Walmart

I've seen people at WalMart before, but cant say I have been near the Costco at night. I have a Bull Mastiff and just love any of the breeds that were spawned from the English Mastiff (with exception of the killer breeds). You have some good lookin dogs that would I'm sure keep things safe at WalMart.

RE: ? for Ford Excursion owners

I wish we hadnt sold our 7.3L, but I wish it didn't have so many problems either. It was a great truck and I wish I still had it. Benefits did outweigh the problems. Hindsight eh? We got 15mpg around town mixed and 7-9 towing.

RE: Bouncing toy hauler

Move some weight forward when you pack. Fill th etanks (if on or in front of the axels) and see if it continues.

RE: ? for Ford Excursion owners

I loved the X I had. Towed way better than the Expy that it replaced. That's all it did better though. The 7.3L was suppose to be bulletproof. Mine wasn't. In the shop 9 times in 1.5yrs. Wish I hadn;t traded it in, but chances are it wouldda kept having issues. If mileage is no issue, get the 3v V10 instead of the 7.3 or 6.0.

RE: Overnight in Chico CA ?? / Costco or Walmart

WalMart has more traffic and lighting. Might be considered good to keep riff raff away. Although Costco is brand new with fueling station. If you'd like a RV Park, The Almaond Tree off of the Esplanade via Eaton Rd. (last interchange headed north)is nice and convenient. Beautiful Danes. You a breeder?

RE: What TH can I pull with my Titan?

I wouldn't pull anything with a Titan, get a real full size truck, I am not going to get into a pissing contest, so I will say a Ford, Chevy or Dodge, remember that you will always want to go bigger, so if you can afford the 350 or bigger go that route now so you aren't doing it later, because you surely will. Bottom line is safety for your family, and even though they say they can tow up to their 9000lbs, I don't believe it, seen to many broke down on the road heading north and south. Just my two cents, I know I am going to get all kinds of flack from the titan owners, but just my humble opinion. If everybody didn't have to go 65mph up Cajon, The Grapevine, etc... keepin up with the Jones' many of the people that have convinced themselves they needed a bigger truck after the fact could have saved 1000s of $ and drove their 1/2T into the ground and upgraded later to another 1/2T or bigger if so desired. I purchased a TH and my TV was a 1/2T. I upgraded like a jackass and lost 1000s of $. The diesel towed better, but that's all it did better. I tow maybe once a month. The 28 other days the 3/4T was a waste of money and an uncomfortable ride. Just because everyopne says you need bigger and better doesn;t make it so. Get what works best for you. I again tow my TH with a 1/2T and am happy with 50mph up the grades (actually the Dmax could ponly pull the grapevine at 50mph)and mostly tow mountains. My 1/2T only goes 40mph up the grades and only gets 7mpg, but the 7.3L Excursion went 50mph and got 7.5mph. I think I see just as many 3/4T and 1T trucks in the service bays of all dealers (except Yota - they aint got one) as I do 1/2T. Just as many broke down on the road as well. I actually see more 3/4T trucks overloaded than 1/2T rolling down the road. 1/2T and 8K lbs or 1T and 16K lbs same thing. Same wear same safety risks.
